Course Description

The Medical Receptionist and Patient Services program provides participants with a foundational understanding of the healthcare delivery system, the role of the PSR, and the tools needed to be a front-line customer-service agent in a medical office or hospital setting. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): written and verbal correspondence with patients, scheduling, collecting co-payments, maintaining patient charts, verifying insurance coverage, and ensuring overall patient satisfaction. This course consists of five modules tailored to those with little or no experience, looking to begin a career in healthcare. Also, please note that basic computer skills are a preferred requirement to ensure your success with this course.

Learner Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes:

  1. Utilize effective therapeutic communication knowledge and skills in a professional setting.
  2. Demonstrate competency in the technological skills needed for working in health care systems.
  3. Utilize appropriate skills/tools to guide patients attempting to navigate health care resources.
  4. Perform entry-level coordination of care by understanding needs of the patient.
  5. Employ an active understanding of medical terminology, diagnosis and appropriate treatments for such.
  6. Respond appropriately to the social and mental health needs of the patient’s related to the cultural differences and/or language barriers.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of basic ethical and legal issues in health care.
  8. Utilize industry standard software to manage electronic health records.

Prerequisites

1. Current Criminal Abstract (https://ecrim.ehawaii.gov) (abstract needs to be submitted within 30 days of issuance).

2. Copy of your photo ID.

3. Proof of 1-Step TB test completed within the last six months.

4. Proof of MMR vaccination (titer is acceptable).

5. Proof of Hep B series vaccination (titer is acceptable).

6. Proof of a 9th-grade English level or higher. Please submit the following as proof of this requirement: AA Degree, BA Degree, college transcripts, TABE results. OR take our EdReady assessment. Please fill out this EdReady Request Form.

This course is online with required virtual sessions. The virtual sessions are scheduled every Tuesday & Thursday (09/17/2024 - 11/26/2024) from 5:30pm-9:30pm via zoom. Classes will also have independent online studies Monday through Friday.

NOTE: The Leeward Community College CERTIFICATE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WILL BE AWARDED ONLY AFTER APPLYING FOR AND TAKING THE NHA/NAHAM CERTIFICATION EXAMS.
