Course Description

Introduces principles for the safe operation of automotive systems. Explains the selection and use of basic automotive tools, equipment, and procedures for the preventative maintenance and minor repair service. Includes lectures, demonstrations, and lab work on shop training units and "live" service vehicles while focusing on safety in shop.

Learner Outcomes

1. Describe principles of operation, of automobile and automotive careers.
2. Explain the use of automotive tools, testing equipment.
3. Demonstrate the ability to work in the shop and follow shop policies.
4. Demonstrate principles of service and minor testing of a vehicle.

Prerequisites

Prior training in automotive and electrical systems (with instructor approval).

Recommendations

a. Demonstrate the ability to follow safety rules and practices in the shop environment and identify the SDS(safety data sheet) for chemicals used in the shop and describe the proper use.

b. Identify the different careers offered in the automotive industry

c. Identify the use of automotive tools used in the industry, the different types of fasteners and their properties.

d. Identify the different types of automotive engines and its operations.

e. Demonstrate the ability to use shop manuals and computers, be able to retrieve information on repairs, and labor rate time for vehicles

f. Demonstrate the ability to perform basic preventative maintenance.

g. Identify the functions of the tire, the different types of tires, sizing of the tires and rims

h. Demonstrate the ability to service the tire and rim of the vehicle

Assessment (2-5) Students will be assessed on attendance, chapter quizzes, chapter tests, shop tasks, and classroom and shop management.
