Course Description

Integrated pest management provides an introduction to the principles involved in the control of pests in the production environment including insects, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and weeds. Whether balcony gardening or farming acreage, insects, diseases or other pests represent challenges. Students will gain insight and knowledge into this subject area, sharpen diagnostic skills and become capable of selecting appropriate tools and integrated strategies to safely and effectively solve problems. Various methods of controlling pests, including the correct method of selecting and applying pesticides, will be covered.  Activities will include field sampling and monitoring, microscopic exploration of collected samples, basic identification, mixing and handling of plant protection products and sprayer calibration.

SLOs: 

1) Differentiate among control options and manage resistance 

2) Calibrate and spray plant protective products effectively

3) Follow a pesticide label as prescribed and use personal protective equipment according to WPS requirements 

4) Evaluate efficacy of control strategy
