Course Description

This three day training focuses on three areas of maintenance and renovation work: Asbestos Awareness, Flood Damage Remediation and Lead Paint Remediation. Gain knowledge in these areas to recognize these hazards as well as safely mitigate these hazards.

Who should attend?
Anyone who is responsible for renovating or maintaining a building, or anyone doing work that has the possibility of disturbing paint, which requires certification. This would include general contractors, sub-contractors, handymen, volunteers, property managers, building owners, facility managers, chief engineers, maintenance technicians, installers and similar job titles should take advantage of this opportunity to get certified as an EPA lead-safe certified contractor.

Course Outline

Do you renovate or maintain buildings, especially ones that were built prior to 1978?
As a contractor or maintenance worker, you play a critical role in helping to prevent lead exposure in buildings. Ordinary renovation and maintenance activities can create toxic lead dust that can harm your customers, children, workers, and even yourself. By following lead-safe work practices, you can prevent lead hazards and reduce childhood lead exposure. Plus you’ll avoid costly fines for non-compliance – up to $37,500 per violation! In general, anyone who is paid to perform work that disturbs paint in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 must be certified. By attending this no-cost training class you can earn your EPA Lead RRP Certification!

Why this training is important?
Remediation of contaminated buildings starts with a hazard assessment. Once that is complete, the removal of mud, muck, silt and other typically semi-solid material from a structure (caused by water inundation) begins. The next step is the removal of damaged construction-related materials, including drywall, insulation, floorboards, paneling, and cabinets. Additionally, the evaluation of personal items, appliances, fixtures must be made to decide what can be salvaged and what must be discarded, with documentation for insurance purposes. Lastly, the building must be prepped for mold removal and rebuild.

Any renovation, repair, or painting (RRP) project in a pre-1978 home that has lead-based paint can easily create dangerous lead dust. If you are planning an RRP project in a pre-1978 home, EPA requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978, use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices.
