Course Description

Communicating through electronic media presents many unique challenges and opportunities. While incorporating basic research and communication skills, electronic media is a new rhetorical environment, significantly different from print. This course will explore the new style of writing on the World Wide Web and will introduce you to the tools you need to develop an effective Web presence.

Module 1: The Changing World of News

This module starts with an overview of journalism and what multimedia journalism is and how it developed. You’ll gain an appreciation for how print and online are different, how the readers’ expectations are different, and consequently how writing must be different. In this module, you will be introduced to Web and blog sites and explore what makes great Web content. You’ll see the need for daily posts and learn the basics of a post: headline, content, photos, links, tags, comments. For hands-on experience, you will publish articles in the online campus newspaper.
