Course Description

This class builds on the knowledge and practices gained in Translation and focuses on concepts related to consecutive interpretation. Various texts are examined and practiced to further illustrate the differences in the organization of information in American Sign Language and English. Strategies are practiced for obtaining message equivalence in the target language. Interpreting theory, team-interpreting practices, text analysis and feedback strategies are applied to situations which allow for sufficient processing time. 

Learner Outcomes

  1. Analyze texts in ASL and English for content, context, affect and prosody, syntax, regional/cultural differences and register. 
  2. Demonstrate strategies for finding equivalent messages between the source and target languages. 
  3. Apply the appropriate interpreting techniques required for effective consecutive interpretations of selected texts.
