Course Description

Do you need some customized assistance in building a package that shouts "Hire Me!" to prospective employers? Not sure where to start or overwhelmed by all the career advice and resume tips on the Internet? Maybe you need a change and haven't updated your resume in a while.

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, this course is for you. Focused entirely on practical application of job readiness theories and skills, this course will help you assemble a customized package that can be used and built upon for the rest of your career. This is not a cookie cutter class; rather it is a course designed to tailor your resume package to your desired career and industry over the course of four two-hour sessions.

*Learners are highly encouraged to bring their own laptops, notebooks, or any other tools they would use to work on crafting their employment package in class.

Session 1: Career Management and Planning

Shape your own career! Create a plan for your personal career by exploring options and developing strategies. You will cultivate more personal awareness as you discover a path that will help to direct and guide your own career. In this session, you will also develop an action plan to help you set individual goals for our industry and experience level. By learning to set and focus on goals, career plans become more clear and meaningful. Discover the importance of goal setting as you design both short- and long-term life goals.

Session 2: Building Your Resume Package

A well-written resume gets your foot in the door and makes it easy for employers to quickly assess your skills and work experience. As you acquire job skills and accomplishments, keeping your resume current is important if you seek growth and development. In this session, you will either work on crafting a resume and/or receive customized feedback on an existing resume. Learn the latest trends in resume formatting, construction, and writing to effectively sell your strengths, education, and experience. You will also begin to create a career portfolio designed to illustrate your work experience and accomplishments.

Session 3: Preparing for Interviews

Ready to meet your future employer? With your resume and career portfolio in hand, this session focuses on planning, preparing, and practicing your interview skills during mock interview in-class sessions. (You are encouraged to come dressed for a real interview!) Time will also be spent crafting necessary documents for post- interview follow-up.

Session 4: Putting it all Together

This final session focuses on polishing your finished product and marketing your personal brand to prospective employers. Learners will also have the opportunity to receive additional feedback on any part of their resume package. Additional career resources will also be discussed.
