Course Description

"Today's business world is almost entirely information-drive. Whether you run a small business or occupy a small corner of the org-chart as a massive multinational corporation, chances are that the bulk of your job consists of communicating with others, most often in writing." ~Dustin Max 

In business, the way you write makes a difference! Whether you are writing a memo or an email to your department, to write effectively you must be clear, concise and your message should be written in a way that is easily understood by the reader. This Business Writing Series covers the basic principles of effective business writing. During this series, participants will improve their business grammar, learn to select the most appropriate communication channel for any given audience, write persuasive messages when necessary and learn to organize ideas, structure, edit and proofread messages for memos, letters and emails.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to use the knowledge gained to: 

  • Use the basic writing process to effectively write, edit and proofread documents (memos, letters and email) that are adapted to their context, audience(s) and purpose. 
  • Analyze audiences according to demographic and psychographic characteristics 
  • Select the most appropriate channels for communication 
  • Analyze and execute writing for persuasive situations 
  • Adapt the organization of business correspondence to support the specific purpose of the message

  • Learn how to execute an effective writing process 
  • Write effective sentences and paragraphs 
  • Avoid common grammatical errors 
  • Adapt sentence structures for tone and delivery of information

  • Recognize the impact of organizational culture on modes of communication within an organization 

Persuasive Messages 

  • Identify the purposes of persuasive messages 
  • Analyze persuasive situations Execute persuasive strategies 
  • Master major persuasive message patterns, including direct-request, sales, and fundraising messages 
  • Maintain goodwill with audiences 

Memos, Letters, and Emails 

  • Write memos, letters and email that are adapted to their context, audience(s) and purpose 
  • Adapt the organization of business correspondence to support the specific purpose of the message 
  • Evaluate business messages written by others and make suggestions for improvement; write effective subject lines; correctly format memos, letters and email.
