EDU3003 - Supporting Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination with Student-Directed Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Course Description
The importance of student active engaged at IEP meetings is self-evident: demonstration of self-determination skills, self-advocacy skills, and self-efficacy skills improve learning experiences, improve quality of life, and lead to greater independence, a major goal for students with disabilities (Branding, Bates, & Miner, 2009; Danneker & Bottge, 2009). While reauthorizations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) called for more student involvement in the IEP process and student attendance has increased, research continues to show student and parent attendance (Arndt, Konrad, & Test, 2006; Branding et al., 2009). By teaching students to lead their own IEP meetings, however, students no longer feel intimidated, they understand the process, language, and how to behave, feel their voice is heard, and see meaning in activity. Students also have increased IEP knowledge and student-led IEPs have higher student and adult satisfaction (Royer, 2017). Participants are encouraged to bring a school-site team member or one other faculty member.Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Describe student-directed individualized education program curriculum to increase active student participation during IEP meetings.
