ENR4301 - Introduction to Mechanical CAD Design (Makerspace)

Course Description

This class will show you around OnShape, a cloud base 3-D cad software. We will be using the student version which has all the power of the professional version but is free to use for students and hobbyists. The only difference is your files can be viewed by any OnShape user. Users can be set up in just a few minutes, log in from home or in class and collaborate together in real time.

This class is intended to offer you a taste of this professional grade 3-D software. Unlike other CAD systems of this caliber, you don’t need an expensive high end computer to use it since it runs on the cloud.  We will cover all of the basic tools used for some simple 3-D models. We will touch on blue print creation as well as how to export models for 3-D printing, casting or CNC machining. You can save your own exported models and prints off to your own computer as well. This is a relaxed pace course intended to expose the power and ease of using OnShape 3D Cad. We will touch on not just modeling but on creating beautiful renders of your models. I’ll show you how you can create assemblies that can be made to be kinetically functional. You will see how easy you can create a simple combustion engine as well as designing you own tool shed for the back yard. You can then quickly make a blue print of each piece of lumber you need for the tool shed using the power of computer aided design software. Learn how to draw up beautiful items for the home such as lamps, vases, signs, even jewelry. Learn how to make an accurate sketch and then turn it into a 3-D article.
Bring some of your own ideas to life with OnShape. Enjoy the fun of using friendly easy to use cad software. Turn your computer on at home and log in to OnShape and continue with projects you have started in class. Bring your own laptop to our class or use one of ours. Be sure to bring a mouse with your own lap top. You will find a mouse useful with OnShape.
