Course Description

This course is to prepare those interested in an entry-level support position in Information Technology such as a Help Desk Specialist, IT Support Specialist, and IT Business Analyst. As you know, information technology is a fast-paced, innovative field. Information Technology Fundamentals is intended to provide a working overview of information systems, their composition, importance in today's world, and a look at future implications. The content will build upon what you already know and experience every day with technology, such as iPhones, email and the Internet, explaining basic components and how digital technology works. From hardware and software to wireless and e-comm, systems are made up of components and protocols. This Fundamentals course offers a basic understanding of digital technology, its function in business, the importance of data security, and the role of an IT practitioner in project management.

You will not be expected to learn software programming in this course. If this is something you are interested in, there are many programs available and this is an area best considered in relation to your personal goals. What IT Fundamentals will provide are the basics and an entrance to opportunities in many other areas including cybersecurity. The course lists many resources designed to guide your curiosity and life-long learning.

Online class meetings will be held via Zoom. Participants are highly encouraged to attend the course orientation on Monday, October 12 from 6:00-7:30pm HST to be held via Zoom.

This course includes online sessions to hold discussions. To attend the live online sessions in Zoom, the following equipment is recommended:

  • Access to a more recent model desktop or laptop, either Windows or Mac or Android or Apple mobile device
  • Reliable high-speed (cable or DSL) Internet connection
  • Recommended: webcam, headset with microphone, if your device does not already have a webcam and microphone

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the classifications of the hardware & software components of an IT system & their relationship.
  2. Understand the classifications of the types of network systems, their benefits & limitations.
  3. Understand & compare the types of telecommunication and factors to consider.
  4. Understand key hardware & software components that support e-commerce.
  5. Understand cloud computing design & cloud computing services.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of IT systems in business.
  7. Explain the underlying principles of information security.
  8. Discuss the role of IT practitioners in cybersecurity.
  9. Explain the role of the IT practitioner in project management.
  10. Explain systems theory as it relates to complex IT systems.
