Course Description

This course focuses on the application of major learning theories, concepts, principles, and practices in the field of education. Students will acquire a wide array of strategies and methodologies to motivate learners, deliver effective instruction, conduct appropriate teaching practices, and use relevant assessments. Students will understand the importance of understanding learners’ diverse backgrounds and needs and how these factors influence their learning and classroom/school experiences. The importance of creating equitable learning environments will be explored, and research regarding current issues in educational psychology
will be conducted.
 
Students should have regular access to a desktop or laptop computer and internet/wi-fi access in order to complete coursework.
 
This course may be relevant to intended future teachers, educational paraprofessionals/teacher assistants, substitute teachers, tutors, parents who have students in a K-12 setting taking high-stakes tests, or anyone interested in considering/exploring the field of education.
 
This course may require field assignments to be conducted at a preK-12 school/classroom setting.
 
This course is conducted fully online and completely ASYNCHRONOUS. Students are not required to meet with each other and/or the instructor at a specific time.  Students will need to complete weekly course work including assignments and discussion forums and will receive feedback from the instructor after submission and will be required to complete and submit an activity within the first week of the course to ensure participation in the course. Your instructor will be in contact with you on a weekly basis so you will need to check your email account regularly. However, this course may include one or more OPTIONAL synchronous online activities. This course may also include field assignments that can be done virtually. This course does not have proctored exams.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply appropriate family theories, models of family involvement, and effective family-professional principles and practices to various scenarios and situations.

  • Communicate and collaborate with families, school personnel, and community members in a respectful, professional, ethical, and culturally responsive way.

  • Ascertain the educational and psychological implications of family characteristics, functions, roles, and interactions on students' learning and the family-professional partnership.

  • Explain how the changes in families and schools and the differences between their value and belief systems influence the family-professional partnership.

  • Construct and implement individualized family support plans in partnership with families.

  • Debate and problem solve social, educational, ethical, legal, and cultural issues and its impact on family-professional interactions.

  • Defend the laws and rights

Refund/Drop Policy:

Failure to attend a class or notifying your instructor of your intent to withdraw does not constitute an official withdrawal from the course.

Agencies submitting a purchase order for course fees will be billed regardless of attendance, unless notification of withdrawal is made by the specified refund deadline.

100% refund: Notification to Non-Credit Registration (NCR) made 10 business days or more prior to start of course.

50% refund: Notification to NCR made 5-9 business days prior to start of course.

0% refund: Notification to NCR made less than 5 business days prior to start of course.

Prerequisites

Qualification for ENG 100 or qualification for ESL 100; and qualification for MATH 82 or Program Coordinator approval.
