Course Description

This course is designed to teach the student techniques and methods of preparing the automobile surface for painting and provide introduction painting techniques.  Emphasis will be placed on proper safety procedures and practices for automotive refinishing, to include OSHA guidelines, Right-to-Know Act, and EPA laws and regulations.

134B.2 Surface Preparation 60 hrs

  1. Inspection, removal and storage of exterior Trim and components

  2. Inspection and identification of surface finish, condition, and film thickness

  3. Cleaning surface area

  4. Paint finish removal

  5. Surface repair and applying fillers

  6. Sanding and final paint preparation

 

134B.3 Spray Gun and Related Equipment Operation 10 hrs

  1. Inspection and cleaning of spray gun and related equipment 

  2. Selecting proper spray gun setup

  3. Testing and adjusting spray gun pattern

 

134B.4 Paint Mixing, Matching and Applying 45 hrs

  1. Identify color code by manufacturer’s vehicle information label

  2. Identify and mix paint using a formula

  3. Blending and matching colors using appropriate formula

  4. Applying multi-stage coats


                                                Total hours 120 hrs

Learner Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate methods and techniques using the appropriate tools and equipment in preparing the surface of an automobile to be painted.

  2. Perform paint mixing at recommended ratios and demonstrate paint equipment usage, maintenance, and cleaning.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of personal and environmental safety practices and observe all industry standards of safety.
