Course Description

This course is an overview of the medical assistant and healthcare profession utilizing primarily didactic method of instructions.  It introduces participants to some of the basic components of the field, including employment conditions, general responsibilities, credentialing options, other allied health professions and the scope of practice in Hawaii. 

Learner Outcomes

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
A.  Comprehend the current employment outlook for the healthcare profession.
B.  Compare and contrast the allied health professions and understand their relation to medical assisting.
C. Comprehend the importance of credentialing.
D. Understand medical assistant and other healthcare credentialing requirements and the process to obtain the credential.
E.  Demonstrate knowledge of the general responsibilities of the medical assistant.
F.  Define scope of practice for the medical assistant.
G.  Comprehend the conditions for practice of healthcare professional within the State of Hawaii.
H.  Identify customer expectations and concerns (e.g. confidentiality, emotional, and spiritual).
I. Identify clinical and financial concerns and patient needs.
J. Arrange customer literacy and comprehension services (e.g. interpreter services, meaningful use data).
K. Employ strategies to deliver quality service and customer satisfaction (i.e. in person and remotely).
L. Recognize the purpose of benchmark processes to improve outcomes.
M. Comprehend key performance indicators (KPI), best practices and dashboards.
N. Employ principles of effective communication (e.g. written, verbal, age appropriate).
O. Utilize national patient safety guidelines (e.g. two patient identifiers, physical safety).
P. Perform CPR skills according to the American Heart Association BLS - Basic Life Support guidelines.
Q. Perform first responder first aid skills according to the American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid guidelines.
