Course Description
Advanced Manufacturing: OSM
This foundational machining course provides a comprehensive introduction to essential skills required for both Inside Machinist (ISM) and Outside Machinist (OSM) pathways. Through 107 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction, participants will develop a strong base in core machining principles, preparing them for specialized training in their chosen track.
Core Curriculum (Required for both ISM and OSM):
This curriculum covers fundamental knowledge and skills essential for all machinists, including:
- Basic Mathematics
- Precision Measurement
- Basic Blueprint Reading
- Bench Work and Layout
- Metallurgy and Material Identification
- Metal Cutting
- Grinding Machine Basics
- Hand Tools
- Drilling Machines
- Tap Basics
- Work Process/QA
Outside Machinist (OSM) Pathway:
The Outside Machinist (OSM) pathway builds upon the foundational skills listed above, providing specialized training for those interested in working on-site, focusing on installing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing large mechanical systems and equipment. Upon completion of the OSM pathway, participants will be proficient in:
- Operating manual hand tools
- Removing, installing, and repairing components
- Taking precision measurements
- Reading blueprints
- Operating safely in an outside machining environment
The OSM pathway consists of 56 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction and is limited to eight students per class. Graduates will be qualified to pursue entry-level positions as Outside Machinists.
