ART1002 - Beginning Acting I (non-credit) (THEA 197)
Course Description
An introductory acting course designed for undergraduates to build fundamental performance skills while honoring Hawai'i's rich theatrical heritage. Students will focus on core acting techniques - including vocal projection, relaxation, body awareness, and overcoming self-consciousness - through theater games, improvisation, monologues, and scene work. Emphasis is placed on integrating Hawaiian and local theater traditions: Hawai'i's local plays often feature Pidgin (Hawaiian Creole English) dialogue and incorporate mele (chant/poetry) or hula to reflect island culture. By engaging with island playwrights and cultural performance practices, students gain a foundation in acting that is both technically sound and culturally responsive to the Hawai'i community. May be repeated for credit, up to 6 credits.Course Outline

Notes
Enrollment in this course through EDvance is a non-credit option, however, course is available for credit. In order to receive college credit, participants must inform instructor at the beginning of the course and successfully complete course with a "C" or better.
Due to a limited number of non-credit seats available and enrollment priority given to traditional credit students, if course becomes over-enrolled, you may have to be removed from the course and refunded.
For in-person or hybrid class sections, students will need to submit and clear all necessary health clearances with Med+Proctor.
