Course Description
The Windward Community College Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Program is a state-approved training designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in healthcare and eligibility for Hawai‘i’s CNA certification exam. The program combines classroom instruction, hands-on skills labs, and supervised clinical experience in a long-term care facility. Over 150 total hours, students learn essential nursing skills, infection control, patient care techniques, communication strategies, and professional standards. Graduates are equipped to provide safe, compassionate, and competent care in diverse healthcare settings.
Course Outline
CNA Program Roadmap: Orientation → Didactic → Clinical → Exam Review → State Exam
Phase 1 – Orientation
Program overview, employer talk, syllabus, uniforms, resources.
Phase 2 – Didactic (Classroom Instruction)
Hours: 104 total (includes reflections).
Phase 3 – Clinical Immersion
Hours: 39 total
Location: Long-Term Care Facility.
Phase 4 – Exam Prep & Testing
Total Program Hours: 150
Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion students will be able to:
- Explain the relationship, interplay and trust between patients and providers.
- Identify and distinguish different levels of healthcare, types of care, and healthcare workforce and provider organizations
- Demonstrate an understanding of Professionalism, OSHA, HIPAA, Patient-Centered Medical Home, Transdisciplinary Teamwork, Community Health, and Evidence-Based Medicine.
- Demonstrate mastery in performing vital signs and basic patient care
- Effectively communicate interpersonally in written and verbal forms
- Demonstrate the understanding of infection control and PPE use
- Recognize abnormal changes in body function and the importance of reporting
- Demonstrate an understanding of caring for impaired cognitive resident and those with mental and social service needs
- Demonstrate comprehension and accurate use of medical terminology.
