Course Description

This course is designed to effectively address each of the key knowledge and skill areas to include: chainsaw safety and field maintenance, basic operation, first aid, transport and storage, and many more. In order to effectively, efficiently and safely participate in this program, each student must possess the appropriate tools, equipment and materials and be prepared to use them properly. Upon successful completion of the program, each student will receive a Certificate of Completion and are generally considered valid for 12 months after the date of training.

Learner Outcomes

Participants will have the key knowledge and skill areas as follows:
a.      Choose the right chain saw;
b.      Basic chain saw operating and safety features;
c.      American National Standard (ANSI) Z133.1 for Tree Care Operations – Pruning, Trimming, Repairing, Maintaining, and Removing Trees and Cutting Brush – Safety Requirements;
d.      First aid supplies;
e.      Selection, use and care of Personal Protective Equipment;
f.       Chain saw toolkit contents;
g.      Transport and storage of chain saws;
h.      Inspection, field care and maintenance of chain saws, including importance of proper fuel mix and bar oil;
i.       Chain tension and sharpening;
j.       Chain saw starting: ground and leg lock;
k.      Chain saw safety considerations, practices and procedures;
l.       Proper cutting techniques: stance, top cut, undercut, kickback prevention; and
m.    Avoiding kickback.

Prerequisites

1. Must be employed to qualify for Good Jobs Hawaii funding assistance.
