Course Description
This course prepares learners for the State of Hawaii Commercial Driver (School Bus) license test. Strong emphasis is placed on the Commercial Driving Manual, School Bus Vehicle Inspection, parking skills, and safe operation in preparation for the tests required to obtain your CDL School Bus license which include the:
- Air Brake Test
- Vehicle Inspection Test
- Basic Vehicle Control Skills Test
- On-Road Driving Test
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires entry-level driver training to cover all topics in the Passenger and School Bus “theory-based curriculum” consisting of these modules:
- Basic Orientation
- Safe Operating Procedures
- Danger Zones
- Loading and unloading
- Student Management
- Advanced Operating Practices
- Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions
- Non-Driving Activities
Students will be required to complete the modules and pass all the module quizzes with an overall competency of 80%. This on-line portion of the course is self-paced and the student will be required to achieve the 80% competency in this module and all the other modules of the course within the 80 - hour course schedule time allotment.
Course Outline
This course prepares learners for the State of Hawaii Commercial Driver (School Bus) license test. Instructions include training on the CDL simulator, pre-trip inspection skills, on campus driving and parking practices, on the road driving and safety skills, and post-trip assessment.
Learner Outcomes
- Successfully complete the ELDT School Bus and Passenger On-line curriculum.
- Successfully complete a School Bus Vehicle Inspection Test
- Successfully demonstrate an air brake test
- Demonstrate “Basic Vehicle Control Skills” which include:
- Straight line backing
- Offset back/right
- Offset back/left
- Parallel park (driver side)
- Parallel park (conventional)
- Alley dock
- Demonstrate safe and responsible road skills in a variety of traffic situations to include:
- Turns, curves and brake usage
- Intersections, railroad crossing and lane usage
- Urban business, bridge/overpass/sign and steering
- Lane changes, general driving behaviors and regular traffic checks
- Expressway or rural/limited access highway, clutch usage and use of turn signals
- Stop/start and gear usage

Prerequisites
- State of Hawaii CDL School Bus Permit.
- Controlled Substances Test Results by Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii.
- Completed Leeward CC Urinalysis Consent Form.
- Hold a current DOT medical examiners certificate during the length of the course
- Can read write and speak English well enough to:
- Speak with the general public and DOT officials
- Understand highway traffic signs and signals
- Respond to official inquiries
- Make entries on reports and records
- Follow directives from the instructor
