Course Description

Kauai Ballroom Dance Club Hanapepe Chapter focuses on American-style social dances for fun, relaxation, and exercise.  Dancing is a journey, and the joy is in the process of learning, practicing, and ultimately mastering the dance. This term, we wish to focus on beginning Waltz and Cha Cha

Each dance also has a cadence that matches the music it is danced to. The way you move in a Waltz is much different than the way you move in a Cha Cha. Understanding the rhythm and cadence of a dance is essential for interpreting the music and moving gracefully.

Ballroom dancing is a partner dance, so before you learn the basic steps, you will learn how to hold your partner.  The one skill that is unique to partnership dancing is leading and following. This is how we actually communicate our dancing intentions to our partner. You can know a lot of steps, but if you do not take the time to learn how to communicate effectively through your body movements, no one will understand you (or your dancing will feel very disconnected).

Remember, ballroom dancing is like developing any new skill. It takes time, patience, and consistent effort. Be prepared to laugh!  It’s okay to feel a little awkward at first – and don’t get discouraged if you don’t pick up the steps immediately. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they’re a natural part of the learning process. Celebrate small victories, embrace the learning process, and most importantly, have fun!  Ballroom dancing should be an enjoyable journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

Waltz: With its diverse styles, the waltz offers a beautiful pathway to start or continue that journey. Waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and is one of the most graceful dances out there, with its main characteristic being the rise and fall of the dancers. Graceful and elegant, the American style features smooth, gliding steps and is punctuated with open movements, underarm turns, and solo spins.

Cha Cha: The Cha Cha is characterized by its catchy rhythm and small, quick steps. The name “Cha-Cha-Cha” mimics the sound of dancers’ shoes as they shuffle during the basic step. It is a Latin dance that originated in Cuba.  Cha Cha has a Latin hip action and, because of the speed, is an exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face. The Cha-Cha is a popular dance in social scenes and is known for its lively, flirtatious style and energetic rhythm.
