Course Description

This course covers the performance of band literature with emphasis on excellence in musical performance and development of professional musicianship. Class members will participate in rehearsals and concerts.

Course Outline

  1. Demonstrate having supplemented an understanding of the creative music tradition through performing the music of important composers and arrangers in the Big Band idiom.
  2. Demonstrate having acquired training in musicality, phrasing, ensemble playing, and technical proficiency on his or her instrument.
  3. Demonstrate artistic growth and personal enrichment through the performance of band music.
  4. Demonstrate having gained practical musical experience through performing various genres and styles.

Prerequisites: Approval of instructor.

Recommended: Experience with instrumental performance.

Band (MUS202)

Repertoire and Grouping

  • Will will alternate small group and large group playing.

    • The large group will play standard concert band literature, with rehearsals limited to 30 minute intervals, with breaks between intervals to allow for ventilation.

    • The larger ensemble will be divided into three chamber groups: brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, and percussion ensemble. Each group will have their own repertoire.

If needed. Additional Curriculum:

  • Online video lessons will be provided in music theory and music history.

  • Students will be provided with method books and solo repertoire for individual practice and growth.

  • At least one private lesson via video conferencing will be offered per student, as requested, during the semester.

 

Social Distancing for All Groups:

  • Instrument masks will be required in accordance with the UH System Guidelines that have yet to be published. There may be modifications especially in terms of vaccinated students.

  • Bell covers will be required for all instruments. Bags are no longer recommended for woodwind instruments.

  • 6 to 9 foot distancing for all students depending on their instrument.

  • Doors will be kept open to allow for maximum ventilation.

  • Groups will play outside on a rotation basis for small groups.
