Course Description

This is an introductory hiking course designed to impart skills such as fitness preparation, navigation, and the logistics of planning a hiking trip on Kaua'i. This class will also examine certain aspects of group dynamics such as problem solving, communication, stress management, and leadership. Hawaiian folklore will be explored on some of the hikes. There will be class meetings for lecture and fitness to prep for the hikes, as well as day hiking trips.

Learner Outcomes

Prerequisites

Medical clearance if you've been inactive. Able to walk at least 3 miles at one time.

Section Notes

Hikes will range in distance from 4-8 miles at various locations south, east or west side of the island. (Instructor will notifiy of locations the week of each hike)

Most hikes will have hills, so participants need to be able to walk up and downhills.

Participants should be able to comfortably walk 4 miles prior to enrolling for this class. 

Participants must have proper athletic or hiking shoes.

Participants may use hiking/walking sticks/poles if needed or desired.

Participants must be prepraed with water, snacks, sunscreen, hat or sunglasses (recommended)
