Course Description

Part A is basic introduction, including History, Biology, Regulations, Pests, and Issues with keeping bees on Maui This is the first in a series four, 5 hour, non credit courses (A,B, C and D) to provide the student introductory information on keeping bees in Hawaii. Part A is basic introduction, including History, Biology, Regulations, Pests, and Issues with keeping bees on Maui. Will also include introduction to the tools, equipment, and safety gear needed. This will be then followed by: Part B, Working with the hive and harvesting honey. and Part C, construction of hives, assembling woodenware/equipment.

Learner Outcomes

Part A. Student will understand basic honeybee/hive biology. Student will know basic equipment needed to start. Student will understand regulatory issues with where bee hives can and not be kept in Maui County.

Notes

The goal of this course is to provide the beginning beekeeper a small glimpse of the commitment needed to begin working with bees and should the student, then want to further training and learn more, they should consider taking the semester length courses in introductory beekeeping (AG 162) and advance beekeeping (Ag 163) that are taught regularly at UHMC Agriculture and Natural Resources Dept.
