Course Description

You may not realize it, but you benefit from the use of geographic information system (GIS) software every day. All over the world, organizations are using GIS to manage the environment, work more efficiently, provide better customer service, and save money. GIS is becoming an integral part of many organizations technology infrastructure.

This course uses Web-based materials and in-class exercises to introduce the fundamental concepts of GIS and the major functionality contained in ArcGIS software from ESRI. It also covers how to download GIS data from the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai`i and how to combine that data with your own GIS data.

In the online course exercises, you will work with a variety of ArcGIS tools as you learn to create maps, find information, create and edit geographic data, and solve a variety of geographic problems. To make best use of class time, it is recommended that you complete assigned online exercises before coming to class. Class time will be spent reviewing the online materials and applying newly learned skills to Hawai`i data and projects. By doing this, you have the benefit of applying theories to real world situations with the guidance of an instructor.

As you progress through the course, you will acquire practical skills that you can apply immediately. By the end of the course, you should feel comfortable working with ArcGIS 10 software on your own, and we hope you will join the community of people in Hawai`i using GIS to solve everyday problems. Future classes will build on this one and cover topics such as working with map services and creating Web mapping applications.
