Course Description

Are you apprehensive when communicating with colleagues, management or friends? Do you find yourself at a loss for words, often thinking about what you should have said after the fact? Do you speak before you think and say things that you realize might offend other people? Have you misinterpreted what someone else has said? Are you hearing but not paying attention to what others are saying? Improve your personal interactions with others by building a strong communication foundation. During this communication series, you will learn to understand who you are as a communicator and how to communicate appropriately with others in a global work environment.

Course Outline

This course includes 6 modules:

  1. Back to Basics: Communication and Perception
  2. Verbal Communication: The Language & Words We Use
  3. Non-Verbal Communication: The Power of Body Language
  4. Hello, Can Anybody Hear Me?
  5. Email and Phone Etiquette
  6. Intercultural and Cross-Cultural Communication: Communicating with Generational and Regional Differences

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize their level of communication apprehension in personal, public, and group situations.
  2. Feel more confident when communicating with others in different situations.
  3. Identify verbal and non-verbal factors that impact behavior, communication styles and business operations.
  4. Identify and demonstrate effective listening skills.
  5. Identify and effectively use appropriate and effective etiquette when communicating in emails, phone calls and face-to-face communications
  6. Identify necessary skills to improve intercultural and cross-cultural communication skills.

Please note: You are encouraged to bring a laptop, tablet and/or smartphone to class to assist you with in-class assignments. If you don’t have access to any of these items, please inform your instructor so we can make arrangements for you.
