Course Description

GIS is an integral part of many organizations’ technology infrastructure. All over the world, organizations are using GIS to manage the environment, work more efficiently, provide better customer service, and save money.

This course uses Web-based materials and in-class exercises to introduce the fundamental concepts of GIS and the major functionality contained in ArcGIS software from Esri. It also covers how to download GIS data from the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai`i and how to combine that data with your own GIS data.

In the online course exercises, you will work with a variety of ArcGIS tools as you learn to create maps, find information, create and edit geographic data, and solve a variety of geographic problems. To make best use of class time, it is recommended that you complete assigned online exercises before coming to class. Class time will be spent reviewing the online materials and applying newly learned skills to Hawai`i data and projects. By doing this, you have the benefit of applying theories to real world situations with the guidance of an instructor.

As you progress through the course, you'll acquire practical skills that you can use immediately. By the end of the course, you should feel comfortable working with ArcGIS software on your own, and we hope you'll join the community of people in Hawai`i using GIS to solve everyday problems.

Selecting the right course dates is dependent on the software you use or intend to use:

  • ArcGIS Pro is Esri’s flagship desktop GIS software which is becoming more widely used. If you are just getting started with GIS, or if you are an experienced ArcGIS ArcMap user who wants to learn the new Pro software, sign up for the ArcGIS Pro session of this class.
  • ArcGIS ArcMap is Esri’s legacy desktop GIS software which is still widely used in many organizations. If ArcMap is your organizations standard, and you need to learn ArcMap, sign up for the ArcGIS ArcMap session of this class.

Both ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS ArcMap sessions cover the same GIS fundamentals as described above, but the workflows used in the homework and in-class exercises will use GIS tools specific to each software.
