Course Description

This 8-week, intensive, hands-on pre-apprenticeship program serves as a direct pathway to becoming a registered apprentice with the Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship Program. Training will start with instruction in carpentry fundamentals and basic tool use, construction math, basic print reading, metal framing, concrete formwork and drywall, and culminate with a 2-week paid internship at an active construction site. Upon successful completion of this pre-apprenticeship program, students will be granted direct entry to any one of the three registered apprenticeship programs administered by the Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship & Training Fund (HCATF).

The pre-apprenticeship program is divided into two parts:

  • Part 1: 6-week Related-Trade Instruction
  • Part 2: 2-week Internship

Course Outline

Training includes instruction in carpentry fundamentals and basic tool use, construction math, basic print reading, metal framing, concrete form work and drywall and a 2-week paid internship at an active construction site.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate safe hand and power tool use.
  2. Demonstrate safe handling of construction materials.
  3. Accurately and adeptly use measuring tools.
  4. Accurately add, subtract and convert commonly used construction units of measure.
  5. Identify basic alphabet of lines.
  6. Demonstrate accurate use of print reading terminology.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of the basic elements in concrete formwork.
  8. Demonstrate understanding of the fundamentals of working with metal framing.

Notes

Attendance is mandatory and strictly enforced for the entire duration of the pre-apprenticeship. Partial credit will not be given. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the training sites. Upon successful completion of this pre-apprenticeship program, students will be granted direct entry to any one of the three registered apprenticeship programs administered by HCATF along with 80 work hour and 175 carpentry class hour credits.

Prerequisites

1. Must be 17 years old minimum.
2. Must be available for a virtual Zoom interview.
3. Must attend on-site orientation at UH Maui College.
4. Provide own transportation to and from UH Maui College and internship training sites on Maui.
5. Must be able to participate in on-the-job internship.
6. Have proper work attire: high visibility shirt or vest, long work pants (no leggings or sweatpants), and covered work shoes/boots (steel-toed preferred).
7. Lift 75 lbs (Carpenters or Millwrights) or 100 lbs (Drywallers).

 

Recommendations

Skills training in basic safety, material handling, using basic tools and introductory carpentry skills including concrete formwork, metal framing and drywall.
