Course Description

The non-credit Certified Nurse Aide is a state-approved 130-hour course combining lecture, lab, and clinical experience to prepare entry-level students to learn the basic nursing care for the elderly, the ill, and the disabled in long-term care sub-acute and home health settings. Students completing the training successfully will be eligible to sit for the certification exam to become certified nurse aides (CNAs).

Health documents and immunizations, criminal background checks, and other requirements will be requested before beginning their clinical experience.

COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the nurse aide as a member of the health care team.
  2. Describe effective nurse aide care to support and maintain patient function and health.
  3. Describe therapeutic communication skills with clients, families, and other members of the health care team.
  4. Describe nurse aide interventions to meet the emotional and physical requirements of special populations.
  5. Discuss ethical, legal principles, and professional conduct in health care settings.
  6. Identify health care infection control and safety procedures.

  2. Demonstrate effective nurse aide care to support and maintain patient function and health.

  4.  Demonstrate nurse aide interventions to meet the emotional and physical requirements of special populations. 
  5.  Apply ethical, legal principles into nurse aide care. 
  6.  Apply health care infection control, and safety procedures into nurse aide care.

Prerequisites

  • Proof of 9th-grade English level. Acceptable documents include college transcripts, placement test scores, prior college diplomas or certificates of training, etc.
  • Health clearances (with TB clearance, MMR, TDAP, COVID vaccine)
  • Criminal background check. (will be required later in the program and sent directly to the clinical site)

Students completing this course will also have a pathway toward the LPN program offered at KCC. Having CNA training with work experience is some of the requirements for entry into the LPN program.
