Course Description

This advanced Fiber Optics training course will provide technical information on the latest fiber optic transmission technologies such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), and Gigabit Ethernet. System components such as the fiber, connectors, subsystem components, transmission equipment, construction equipment, and testing equipment will be discussed. The course will provide an engineer, technician, consultant, and manager with information for design specification, installation, and maintenance of complex, advanced fiber optic transmission technology.

The course starts with the present state of telecommunications and LAN equipment and transmission requirements and moves on to advanced fiber optic network components, Local Area Network fiber issues, metropolitan and long haul network fiber issues, and advanced OTDR troubleshooting. On the second day, we move on to the advanced testing techniques and troubleshooting with multiple hands-on session, and we continue additional hands-on sessions with equipment integration, EDFA, OSA, and short distance OTDR testing.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to demonstrate your practical knowledge of working with advanced fiber optics transmission equipment and troubleshooting. The instructor will evaluate hands-on work, and an examination is given as part of the training.

This course uses hands-on techniques to teach proper handling of actual equipment used in the field such as standard and specialized OTDRs, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, specialized power meters and light sources, and other specialized transmission and test equipment.

Effective February 4, 2009, BICSI recognizes Advanced Fiber Optic Training for 21 BICSI Continuing Education Credits (CECs).
