Course Description

Interested in building and operating control systems used in power and process industries? This course will teach you the fundamental skills to become a process technician. In addition, you will earn an industry recognized certificate in industrial maintenance. Course topics include system configuration, instrumentation, data evaluation, safety protocols and regulations, and operating of industrial control systems.

Learner Outcomes

Instrumentation: Students will be able to identify, discuss and understand many process industry related Instrumentation concepts, including process variables, elements and instruments for pressure, temperature, flow, level analytical, vibration and speed, along with control loops and valves, diagrams and troubleshooting.

Safety, Health, and Environment: Coursework, demonstrations and exercises highlight the importance of regulatory compliance issues to be addressed in the performance of all job tasks.

Equipment: Student will have a fundamental knowledge of typical equipment used in the process industry. Successful completion of the course will indicate that the student possesses essential knowledge of the equipment's function, mechanical attributes, typical modes of operation and their uses in processes. Systems: Students will study the interrelation of equipment and systems, arrange equipment into basic systems; describe the purpose and the function of specific systems; explain how factors affecting systems are controlled under normal conditions; and recognize abnormal conditions.

Troubleshooting: Student will have a fundamental knowledge of troubleshooting typical equipment problems in the process industry. Troubleshoot various problems either by simulation or actual even to include, but not limited to: pump failure, loss of electrical power, plugged line, loss of controller action, open bypass valve, fouled head exchanger, electrical failure, loss of transmitter signal, loss of steam, loss of cooling water, and human error.
