Course Description

This module is reserved for current KCC CA Medical Assisting students who have successfully completed their first semester. Program Director approval is required to enroll.

The Certificate of Achievement program is a 3 semester, 33 credit program that has been awarded accreditation by the Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), on recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). The Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting prepares individuals to assist physicians in a variety of healthcare settings, private medical offices, clinics, and hospital outpatient clinics, performing clinical and administrative duties. Medical Assistants are multiskilled health care professionals specifically educated to assist with patient care as well as with routine office laboratory and diagnostic tests (clinical medical assisting). In addition, students are prepared to perform administrative medical office and business practices and procedures (administrative medical assisting). The curriculum consists of didactic studies, on-campus lab practice, and supervised practice in affiliated offices and clinics. The curriculum is aligned with standards of the the Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), on recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Graduates of the accredited program will be immediately eligible to take the national certification examination of the American Association of Medical Assistants, Inc (AAMA) to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).

Course Outline

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting, the student should be able to:

  • Perform administrative and clinical skills expected of a beginning practicing medical assistant in an entry-level position.
  • Maintain professional and ethical behavior as a health care provider.
  • Communicate, interact and work appropriately and effectively with patients, patients’ family, peers, staff and supervisors.
  • Discuss the value of lifelong learning and being an active member of a professional society.
  • Identify and use multicultural perspectives to meet the needs of diverse populations.
