Course Description

The Kaimuki Business Professional Association (KBPA) was founded in 1946 by Mrs. Takao Ozawa Takeyo, whose family owned Kaimuki Dry Goods. Over the years the KBPA has served Kaimuki's businesses while also linking its members, services, and support with the local community. Among KBPA's top priorities is education.

On July 13, 2023 Kapi'olani Community College Community and Continuing Education collaborated with the KBPA members and guests to watch a culinary demonstration given by Chef Grant Sator about how to safelv and properl barbecue chicken, pork, and shrimp kabobs. Each participant was served a sample of each BBQ item along with grilled onions, Okinawan, and Japanese sweet potatoes. Among the guests were KBPA scholarship recipients and their families. The KBPA held a brief meeting during which time they awarded scholarships to graduates from Kaimuki Christian, St. Louis, and Sacred Hearts Academy. Each of the four scholarship recipients thanked everyone and talked about their career aspirations and where they will attend college.

Course Outline

This course will meet the needs of the KBPA to sponsor an event that allows members to learn about safe and proper BBQ techniques; to conduct a meeting their meeting to award scholarships; to introduce new people to the Culinary Institute of the Pacific and Kapiolani CC's culinary classes; and to receive revenue.

Learner Outcomes

Participants will: know how to safely barbecue shrimp, chicken, and pork kabobs; demonstrate proper grilling techniques; remember the correct cook temperatures for shrimp, chicken, and pork; recall the role that KBPA and Kapi'olani CC's role in providing educational opportunities for local students.

The KBPA and Kapi'olani Community College celebrated their 75th Anniversary in the same year. During that year, Community and Continuing Education sponsored a 75th Anniversary Kaiaulu Webinar Series that featured businesses and organizations that were celebrating their 75th Anniversary.
