Course Description

Most hospices across the State require two years of experience to work in a specialty healthcare setting such as palliative care. With this Residency program, however, new nurses may bypass this requirement and begin their career upon licensure. The Nurse Residency program will be a 52-week program designed to facilitate the transition of the newly graduated nurse or registered nurse with less than two years of acute care experience into the work setting.

It will support newly graduated registered nurses as they transition from the classroom to the hospice nursing profession. The program offers professional and peer support from experienced nursing leaders and staff with opportunities for self-learning and simulation-based activities in the participant’s area of interest to build professional competence, confidence in practice, and clinical judgment. They will receive a variety of learning experiences in a safe, hands-on, and supportive environment.

Course Outline

Nurses will receive training in hospice and palliative care, as well as on the fundamentals of nursing with a focus on clinical judgment and performance skills, inter-professional collaboration, evidence-based practice expertise, and professionalism.
