Course Description

This 32-hour course is designed for bilingual speakers who wish to work as community interpreters in schools, hospitals, social service settings, at court, for government agencies, etc. An overview of the community interpreting field will be introduced with a focus on: a) community interpreter's role and profession (principles, ethics, and current issues); b) interpreting skills to be used with consecutive and simultaneous interpretation (note-taking, concentration skills, sign translation skills); and how to prepare for an interpretation assignment (research skills, glossary building, role-plays, etc.). The course concludes with a final exam to demonstrate the students' acquired skills and knowledge.

Course Outline

The need has grown exponentially for trained bilingual Community Interpreters in every industry sector such as health, legal, social services, education, business, etc. Access to services and information is a Civil Right, yet individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) have a language barrier and cannot get assistance. The role of Community Interpreters is to help bridge that gap and make it possible for individuals to get access to the services and information they need. This class prepares students with foundational skills to help in various fields.
