Course Description

University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College will provide a unique 9-days Intensive English and Hawaiian Culture program for the students of Kagoshima Prefectural College. The program will focus on English language and various aspects of Hawaiian culture. Lectures will be conducted primarily in English with Japanese interpretation when necessary. 

This program includes various sites visits to significant places such as Kamehameha V Judiciary Center, Iolani Palace, and Pearl Habor-USS Missouri. 

Course Outline

Course Content and Activities 

  1. English language classes 
  2. Interview workshop 
  3. English Activity: Kamehameha V Judiciary Center Mock Trial 
  4. Hawaiian Culture Workshop 
  5. USS Missouri tour/State Capital Visit 
  6. Hula 
  7. Ukulele and Hawaiian Songs 
  8. Talk and Work at Ka Papa Lo'i o Kanewai 
  9. Final Presentations 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of program, the students will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic principles and concepts of Hawaiian culture;
  2. Demonstrate an example of Hawaiian lei making and hula;
  3. Apply the knowledge of English language concepts and skills in actual classroom and interview setting.
