Course Description

Translation focuses on analyzing, processing, and translating various texts in American Sign Language and English without the immediate time constraints typically encountered while interpreting. Strategies for obtaining message equivalence between the two languages are discussed and practiced while using texts drawn from materials typically found in educational settings. Various translated works are examined to illustrate the differences in the organization of information in ASL and English. 

Learner Outcomes

  1. Analyze texts in ASL and English for content, context, affect and prosody, syntax, regional/cultural differences and register. 
  2. Demonstrate appropriate strategies for achieving source to target message equivalence in selected texts.
  3. Produce effective transcriptions and translations of selected texts.
