Course Description

The Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, & Stabilization (PEARS®) Provider Course is designed to help the basic life support (BLS) provider develop the knowledge and skills needed for emergency evaluation and treatment of seriously ill infants and children.

Paramedics are asked to register for a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS®) provider / refresher as this course is designed for Emergency Medical Technicians.

This course is for State of Hawaii licensed EMT providers only. Non-state licensed and non-EMS providers will be admitted at the discretion of the course director/instructor.

 

Non-state licensed and/or non-EMS providers may be admitted at the discretion of the course instructor/coordinator (these outside providers may reach the course instructor/coordinator using contact information provided within the course detail).

Learner Outcomes

In this course the students will learn how to:

  • Recognize respiratory distress, shock, and cardiac arrest.
  • Provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until the child is transferred to an advanced life support (ALS) provider.

Kapi‘olani Community College Refund/Drop Policy:

100% refund: Notification to Non-Credit Registration made 10 business days or more prior to start date of course.

50% refund: Notification to Non-Credit Registration made 5-9 business days prior to start date of course.

0% refund: Notification to Non-Credit Registration made less than 5 business days prior to start date of
course.

PLEASE READ: All courses are first come first served, with preference given to State of Hawaii EMS licensed providers. Non-state licensed and non-EMS providers will be admitted at the discretion of the course director/instructor, with fees additional to the card fee. Often classes fill up quickly; therefore, it is highly recommended you sign up for this class as soon as possible. Those on the “first come-first served” wait list who gain access will be notified by the college prior to the start of class so long as adequate time allows. Non-state EMS providers may be denied admission even after registration based on space availability due to preferential listing of State of Hawaii EMS providers. Confirmation will occur 1 week prior to course date.

Non-State of Hawaii EMS Licensed Providers (out of state license, RN, MD, etc.) fee: $175.00. If you are a non-State of Hawaii EMS Licensed Provider and are interested in enrolling for this class, please contact Mario Fuentes at fuentesm@hawaii.edu

An exception may be made to this policy in the event that you are scheduled to work four days or less before the start of class. You are responsible to notify Mario Fuentes at fuentesm@hawaii.edu. Repeated absenteeism may result in exclusion from future CME at KapCC.

Prerequisites

  1. Hold a current State of Hawaii EMT license.
  2. You must have access to the most current PEARS® Provider textbook and bring that book to class.
