Course Description

What does it mean to be a "professional" in a global work environment? Can you accurately define it or do you only have a vague concept? A recent focus group of employers in Hawaii revealed that one of the top soft skills lacking among entry level workforce in our state is a sense of professionalism. 

This course is designed to help you develop an understanding of how "professionalism can impact businesses-from the quality of customer service, to teamwork and productivity and, ultimately, the profitability of an global organization. Additionally, you will learn to cultivate your own sense of professionalism in the workplace and how to define its characteristics depending on your own workforce. 

Course Outline

Total Course Length: 1.5 hours. 

  • Session 1: Career Management and Planning (2 hours) 
    • ?Knowledge check based on information presented in free workshop 
    • Brief review of short and long term goals 
    • Career Dreams and Wish List 
    • Turn the dreams into action-develop action plan 
    • Homework for Session 2-Bring a draft resume to class 
    • Post-Test 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Explain important aspects of professionalism in the business environment. 
  • Demonstrate professionalism and effective interaction with customers. 
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional manners and conduct cross-cultural business communication in a global business environment.

Although not required, learners are highly encouraged to attend the SOS Job Readiness workshops sponsored by Kapiolani Community Colleges Career Services Office. Information and schedules for these free workshops can be found at http://library.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/SOS/scheduleJob.html.
