Course Description

This course provides students with hands-on practice under the supervision of a licensed massage therapist. It covers aspects of synthesis and application of foundational knowledge gained in the Certificate of Competence in General Massage Therapy.

Learner Outcomes

  • Competency 1: Demonstrate and apply basic principles of anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and medical terminology in a clinical setting for massage therapy.
  • Competency 2: Demonstrate correct positioning and draping of clients for application of general and specialty massage techniques.
  • Competency 3: Apply principles of good posture and body mechanics to reduce the risk of injury to practitioner and client.
  • Competency 4: Demonstrate ability to perform massage to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Competency 5: Demonstrate good hygiene, sanitation practices and infection control as requirements for massage therapy and as outlined by the State of Hawaii, Board of Massage Therapy and Department of Health.
  • Competency 6: Recognize indications and contraindications for various situations and among different clientele for massage therapy.
  • Competency 7: Demonstrate understanding of the scope of practice as a massage therapist.
  • Competency 8: Demonstrate understanding of effective communication skills and socio-cultural differences and values in massage therapy practice.
  • Competency 9: Practice ethical behavior in massage therapy practice.
  • Competency 10: Demonstrate effective marketing, recruitment, and administrative skills in maintaining a steady client base.

Successful completion of Massage Practice 2 and Professional Issues. Minimum concurrent enrollment in Your Body and Your Health 4; or program director recommendation.
