Course Description

As residents of Hawai'i, we have a collective responsibility to share knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture that is accurate and respectful. During this course you will learn how to enhance important communication skills such as interpretation and storytelling when speaking about our state. In addition, you will learn how to design and develop customized tours for your visitors. Whether you are hosting your friends or a professional tour, this course will help you develop engaging storytelling and presentation skills. 

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Explain the standards for tour professionals 
  • Deliver a mock tour based on accurate information about Hawaii's history, culture, and language using learned communication, interpretation, and storytelling skills 
  • Create a customized tour based on customer preferences and interests 
  • Deliver a customized tour for (location specific) island 
  • Outline procedures for dealing with unexpected challenges 
  • Present interesting and accurate information about the language, history, culture, and sites of Hawai'i
  • Describe the importance of sustainability of culture to Hawaii as tourism destination
