Course Description

Basic standard Hawaiian will be taught through written and oral exercises.  Students are expected to attend and participate in class and complete any ha’awina (assignments) for discussion. This course will be (18 hours).

 

Course Outline

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This class will expand your knowledge of Hawaiian. Hawaiian 1 will introduce you to the foundations of Hawaiian language- vocabulary, grammar, and culture. Hawaiian is an oral culture, so speaking will be a big part of the class and is highly recommended to practice using the language outside of class.

?**At each level of all Hawaiian language classes, students will learn different speech patterns and not necessarily become fluent, but will develop abilities in reading, writing, and speaking using those patterns taught at the different levels and have a good “working knowledge” of the language.  Please remember, the only way to enhance learning any language is to practice using it. E ho‘omanawanui. Be patient. 
 

Learner Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course, the student will:

  • Be able to carry on simple conversations using descriptive sentences, two types of equational sentences, and simple verb sentences,
  • Understand the relationship of language to an indigenous culture
