Course Description

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach Preparation Course is designed to prepare a well-skilled, safety-motivated motorcyclist to become a MSF Certified RiderCoach. The primary objective of the certification course is to prepare students to conduct The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF Basic RiderCourse as well as other specialized courses and modules of The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Rider Education and Training System (MSF RETS). The course consists of both classroom and practical range training, practice coaching, administration, assessment, emergency procedures, and evaluation techniques. The MSF RETS is based upon the principles of adult learning. Participants will receive training on how to conduct training in an adult learning environment.

Requirements to become a Hawaii RiderCoach include (may not be an exhaustive list):

  1. Completion of the RiderCourse® RiderCoach Preparation Candidate Application

  2. Licensed, experienced motorcycle operator with a minimum of 3 years riding experience

  3. High School diploma or equivalent

  4. 21 years of age minimum

  5. Driving record with no more than 3 moving violations, no alcohol related traffic violations, and no driver's license suspension, revocation, or denial within the three years preceding the date of application to become a coach.

  6. Graduate of a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course (BRC, ERC or BRC2)

  7. Have a recommendation from a current RiderCoach

  8. Certified in basic first aid and CPR

  9. You will be expected to be a role model for Hawaii motorcyclists, and as such, will be expected to wear the proper gear, to include a DOT helmet, eye protection, sturdy over the ankle footwear, long pants of durable material, long sleeved shirt or jacket and full fingered gloves; ANYTIME that you ride a motorcycle.

Hawaii Motorcycle Safety Education Instructor Application Requirements

The following items must be submitted to the DOT in order to issue Motorcycle License Skills Test Waivers:

  1. Application
  2. Copy of original social security card and Driver’s license
  3. Certified copy of birth certificate
  4. Copy of high school diploma or equivalent.  May also submit letter from school verifying graduation.
  5. Driver’s abstract no more than 1 month old
  6. Certified copy of Hawaii criminal history record check
  7. Proof of application for FBI criminal history record check
  8. Copy of current CPR & First Aid certifications
  9. Proof of completion of a certified rider education instructor course
  10. 2”x2” frontal photos of your face and two signed signature cards
