Course Description

Learn the fundamentals of health care giving techniques. Students gain knowledge and skills through both theory and practice in the classroom, nursing lab settings and actual clinical experiences at designated medical facilities. Upon successfully completing this course, students who meet eligibility requirements are prepared for the state Certified Nurse Aide examination. Participants also earn a First Aid/CPR certification.

Course Outline

This state approved Nurse Aide Training Program introduces the fundamentals of health care giving techniques through theory and practice in the classroom, nursing lab settings and actual clinical experiences at designated medical facilities. Students who meet eligibility requirements are prepared for the state Certified Nurse Aide examination (exam fee included in tuition).

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Apply standard precautions in the provision of care.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate skills to assist the resident in attaining and maintaining independence.
  3.  Execute safe and effective personal care and hygiene when assisting with activities of daily living.
  4.  Employ the use of residents rights as defined by state and federal agencies.
  5. Assess and respond to the social and mental health needs of the resident related to the aging process and impaired cognition.

Notes

Two CNA cohorts are scheduled for Fall 2023. Applicants for Hana Career Pathways should apply for their specific section as follows:

Kahului students: Section 030
Molokai students: Section 031

Prerequisites

1. Background check

2. Copy of your photo ID (government-issued or student ID accepted)

3. Copy of health insurance card

4. TB clearance for healthcare workers per HI state guidelines

• 2 step TB test or
• History of 2-step TB test with annual screening every year after that or
• Negative quantiFERON gold blood test or
• If a history of positive skin test, a chest x-ray within the last year, or chest x-ray with annual screening every year since

5. MMR vaccination x 2 doses

6. Varicella vaccination x 2 doses

7. Proof of Hep B series x 3 vaccination (titer is acceptable).

8. Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) vaccination within the last 10 years

9. Proof of Influenza Vaccination (Fall '24-'25 version)

10. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (Updated '24-25 version)

11. ENG 19 w/ C grade or placement at ENG 22/55
