Course Description

Sustainable Production Practices provides an introduction to agricultural practices that have demonstrated economic feasibility while reducing negative impacts to the land and the community at large. Participants will become familiar with professional and sustainable methods of production practiced in Hawaii. Partipants gain an understanding of plant nutritional needs, soil type and fertility as well as methods of amendment. Hands-on activities will include hydroponics, various forms of plant propagation, composting, compost teas, and much more.
 

Learner Outcomes

1. Germinate and establish strong, healthy plants.
2. Provide plants in production with needed nutrition.
3. Construct non-circulating hydroponic systems.
4. Provide plant nutrients and soil amendment through calculation and sampling.
5. Install a constant liquid feed system and monitor plants.
6. Understand the characteristics of different soil types.
7. Propagate plants vegetatively.
8. Utilize sustainable production strategies to maintain or enhance soil health.
9. Utilize on- and off-farm resources to create soil amendments.
