Course Description

This class is designed to prepare participants for for the in-demand job of medical intrepreting on Maui. Completion of the course will qualify participants for these jobs  and a member of Maui Memorial Hospital staff will brief participants on job details. This class is recommended for those who already do language interpreting and would like to prepare for interpreting in the highly specialized medical and health fields. Topics to be covered include: the New CLAS Standards, Professional interpreter ethics, laws and regulations on language access, the roles and modes of interpreters, medical terminology and professional development. Skill building through practice is a large part of the class. These skills include consecutive interpreting, note taking, working with providers, and cultural intervention. Full or partial scholarships are available through the Workforce Development office for those unemployed or underemployed. Participants may also qualify for the A&B Grant if they are unemployed or sole proprietors through the EdVenture Maui College Registration office at 984-3231.

Prerequisites

Participants must be bi-lingual with good English reading and writing skills. Recommended, but not required: Experience as a language interpreter in the courts, or community or medical setting. Participants are encouraged to sign up with a person who speaks their same language so as to facilitate the skills building sessions.
