SUS6120 - Youth Ocean Stewardship Certification

Course Description

The Youth Marine Science Stewardship Certification is designed to introduce high school students to ocean conservation issues from a local, Maui-based perspective and a scientific lens. Students will learn the fundamental principles of ocean stewardship through applied learning (‘aina-based and place-based), field trips, and hands-on instruction focused on promoting key science and communication skills.

Students will learn to draw conclusions from nature-based observations, understand the connectivity between marine and human environments, and work as a team to collect, analyze, and effectively interpret scientific data.

Course Goal: Students will develop a foundational knowledge of local marine conservation issues through a scientific lens and place-based learning.

Competencies:

1. Communication Concepts/Techniques including presentations and interviewing community members and subject matter experts.
2. Ability to collect, analyze and compare water quality data.
3. Understanding of estuaries and wetlands.
4. Understanding of the importance of ocean stewardship.

Learner Outcomes

1. Plan and carryout scientific investigation as they relate to ocean threats.
2. Analyze scientific data to evaluate marine ecosystems and potential threats to marine ecosystems.
3. Work within a diverse team to apply data and develop actionable solutions to address current, Maui-based ocean conservation challenges.
4. Apply the concepts of kilo (observation) to daily routines and scientific inquiry.
5. Clearly and precisely communicate ocean conservation issues and solutions from a science-based perspective.
