Course Description

This one-day course is designed to meet the requisite knowledge and skills components found in NFPA 472--Standard on Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents--for the Awareness level responder. A combination of lecture, videos, discussion, and in-class activities to accomplish this goal. While attempting to meet this national consensus standard we will emphasize points that are of particular value to EMS providers here in Maui County.

Non-state licensed and/or non-EMS providers may be admitted at the discretion of the course instructor/coordinator (these outside providers may reach the course instructor/coordinator using contact information provided within the course detail).

Learner Outcomes

Know what you need to know in order to keep yourselves safe when responding to a hazmat incident. Know how to help keep others safe from a hazmat incident. Understand training requirements and roles with respect to hazmat. Recognize a hazmat incident and start identifying hazards and vulnerabilities. Understand how various hazardous materials harm people. Be able to use the DOT ERG to take appropriate actions at an incident involving hazardous materials. Get familiar with what a large-scale hazmat operation looks like and how EMS providers may fit in. Become broadly aware of what HAZMAT team can and can't do with respect to hazmat incidents. Get familiar with the hazardous materials that are found (what we've got, where it is, how to recognize it, what to do about it...) Gain an appreciation for the dangers of responding to a hazmat incident without recognizing what you have encountered and without basing your actions on a clear understanding of the key facts and principles necessary to ensure the safety of yourselves and others.

Prerequisites

EMT, paramedic, and EMR professional affiliation with a public safety entity providing first response for medical and trauma emergencies within the State of Hawaii.
