Course Description

This is a course that provides an introduction into the overview of what is required in designing a micro-hydro system. The focus will be on core concepts that may be applied to a wide range of hydro applications, including irrigation ditches that are commonly found.  Participants will perform preliminary system sizing for mechanical and electrical power generation of small 1-2kW systems. This course combines class lectures and lab exercises. Hands-on exercises include: methods of flow measurement, determining head, analyzing and assembling small functioning systems.  Included are methods on how to implement diversion loads and incorporating battery charging for both reserve and surge loads.  Some of the topics covered are: Safety Procedures, System Components, Turbine Types, AC and DC Systems, Site Analysis, System Design, Battery Storage, Controls, Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Hybrid Systems.
