Course Description

Our approach to teaching CNA includes Hawaiiana and gardening. Students will achieve a level of knowledge, skills and abilities essential to provide basic care to ill and disabled persons. Skills are listed below. Teaching methodologies include lecture, lab and supervised clinical hours in a long-term care facility. In Hawaii, cultural understanding in the healthcare setting promotes holistic healing--a balance of mind, body and soul promotes positive outcomes for the patient and caregiver.

Upon successful completion of the course and clinical hours students will be awarded a Certificate of Professional Development which will allow them to take the State of Hawaii Nurse Assistant Competency Evaluation examination with Prometric to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA).

This a 162-hour online course, with scheduled meeting times on Zoom.  Students will also work on course assignments in their own time.

Online Instruction

Introduction to Clinical Skills and Patient Care, which includes Introduction to Hawaiian and Indigenous Health and Healing and Kupuna Care for Nurse Aides
Meets real-time online, Monday – Thursday, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM, using Zoom. Students are also responsible for independent learning outside of scheduled class meeting time.

Clinical Practicum
Meets on-site, 8 days, Monday – Thursday, 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Learner Outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Effective communication with patients, supervising nurses, doctors, and other nursing assistants
  2. Proper infection control procedures including hand washing and patient hygiene
  3. Safety and emergency procedure including fire safety, daily patient safety procedures, and the Heimlich maneuver
  4. Advocacy of patient’s rights
  5. Caring for the aged in a practical setting
  6. Appropriate conduct including language and dress with supervising nurse, families, and other nursing assistants within multicultural settings in Hawaii
  7. Taking and recording vital signs
  8. Measuring and recording height and weight
  9. Caring for the residents’ environment
  10. Recognizing abnormal changes in body functioning and the importance of reporting such changes to a supervisor
  11. Caring for patients when death is imminent
  12. Bathing the patient
  13. Grooming and hygiene including mouth care
  14. Dressing
  15. Toileting
  16. Assisting the patient with eating and hydration
  17. Proper feeding techniques
  18. Skin Care
  19. Transfers, positioning, and turning
  20. Training the patient in self care according to the patient’s abilities
  21. Use of assistive devices in transferring, ambulation, eating and dressing
  22. Maintenance of range of motion
  23. Proper turning and positioning in bed and chair
  24. Bowel and bladder training
  25. Care and us of prosthetic and orthotic devices

Prerequisites

1. Physical examination,

2. Two-step TB skin test,

3. MMR immunizations,

4. Covid-19 vaccination check using LumiSight UH app,

5. Criminal background check,

6. Math/Reading Placement Test,

7. Personal computer/tablet and Internet access
