Course Description

This course is your first step toward building a career as a nationally recognized certified Solar PV Installer or certified PV Technical Salesperson. Participants are provided with the knowledge to sit for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Entry Level exam. NABCEP is the gold standard for solar certification. Basics of electricity, principles of solar irradiance and irradiation, and PV System components/configurations will be covered. This introductory course is also designed to teach individuals how to physically install solar panels and components on a roof deck. Completing this course is required to be eligible to take the exam. A person who passes the NABCEP PV Entry Level exam has demonstrated a basic knowledge of photovoltaic systems, which is an important first step in preparing individuals to become highly skilled, qualified, and experienced tradespersons and professionals in the PV industry. According to Hawaii law, all electrical work needs to be performed by a licensed electrician.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the 10 main electricity and PV ratings (voltage, current, resistance, power, energy, solar irradiance, solar irradiation, time, temperature, and frequency).
  • Understand, use, and manipulate the 4 main electricity formulas (Ohm’s law, power formula, energy formula, and efficiency).
  • Draw a diagram of a PV system with all major components labeled and their functions listed.
  • Identify and describe the different types of PV systems (stand-alone, grid-tied, bi-modal, etc.) and their main features.
  • Properly size and design a PV system for performance and safety.
